Arts & Culture
This "Cultural Corner" aims to introduce you to the Arabic culture and its people through a glance at films, music and literature. This section introduces some of the cultural aspects that both draw on and drive the Arabic language.
It is important to note that portraits, sculptures and music are frowned upon by Islam and that this has traditionally led to the development of architecture and calligraphy.
Many of the projects like the Taj Mahal, Qutab Minar, Citadel of Salahuddin, Al-Hambra, Muhammad Ali Mosque, Blue Mosque, Red fort, Topkapi Palace and the Dome of the Rock were of epic proportions and are a testament to the creativity and genius of the people that undertook building them. However, the Arab world is the ultimate melting pot of styles and cultures as well as civilizations.
This section also includes write-ups about some of the contributors to Arabic arts and will hopefully aid your search for high quality artistic material.
I encourage you to share opinions, thoughts and ideas about the material through the Blog. As your contributions will surely enrich the site and our collective understanding. Naturally exposure to Arabic Cultural icons will aid your understanding of that which exists beyond words.
I I have included a Pinterest board with some beautiful examples of calligraphy and another one that will take you on a tour of the Arab world.
Additionally, I have included three videos below. One is about Islamic Calligraphy, one is a slideshow of pictures I took in Egypt and Turkey and the third is a compilation of photos taken at the museum of Islamic Art in Cairo . I hope you enjoy all and please view them in full-screen.
